PUBG announces paid ‘event pass’ to unlock rare cosmetic items

by Charlie Fripp

How often have you crossed your fingers while unlocking a crate in PUBG, hoping that it will be that elusive red scarf that sells for about R10 000?

Well, that whole system is going to change somewhat, as developers PUBG Corp. announced a new structure to crates and cosmetic rewards – just in time for the launch of the new Sanhok map.

What is being called the ‘Event Pass’, the developers explained that it is “designed to reflect the opinions of players who wanted a trackable progression-related system, and at the same time allows you to unlock new content in PUBG in a way that is different from the crate and key system.”

The ‘Event Pass’ is essentially a pass that allows you to unlock and keep rare cosmetic items through ‘missions’. Those items will not be available in any of the other crates.

It will launch on 22 June, the same day as the new map.

If you don’t want to buy the pass straight off the bat, there is some good news. You can still do the trackable missions and if you complete them the unlocked cosmetic items will be temporarily available to you. You can then buy the pass afterwards if you want to keep them.

“This first Event Pass is all about celebrating the launch of Sanhok, so it includes an item set that fits the map Sanhok thematically. The Event Pass will last for about four weeks, and it includes dozens of missions, including daily missions, weekly missions, and Sanhok-specific missions. By completing missions and leveling up, you’ll unlock rewards. These rewards won’t be tradable or marketable, so only those of you who really earn them will get to show them off in-game,” PUBG Corp. explained.

During this time, you will also be able to unlock one free chance to change your in-game PUBG name.
